the transparent gifs throughout the rest of this site which are created from black
& white woodcuts and engravings, these pictures are mostly from medieval paintings
and manuscripts. Many
of them feature gold leaf, also known as gilt, gilding, embellishing, or illumination.
These files are relatively large compared to the woodcuts as they're full colour. We
have divided them into themes: Animals; Miscellaneous;
O Series; Religious; Royal
and Rustic. Click on each category to see all available
